Long Beach Dub Allstars x Passafire & Mind State

Animas City Theatre PresentsLong Beach Dub Allstars x Passafire & Mind StateSunday October 29th 2023$40 /$45 / 21+Doors 7:00pm / show 8:00pmTickets on sale online August 11th at 10:00am After making their triumphant return in 2020 with their self-titled album, Long Beach Dub Allstars are taking it all the way back-to-basics on their new album “Echo Mountain High”. The album will take listeners on a trip through a psychedelic mountain range of musical madness filled with reggae, rock, ska, hip hop, hard dub, and soul. When the pandemic hit, tour was cancelled and the band was put down for about a bit.  After about a year, Long Beach Dub Allstars, Opie Ortiz and Edwin Kampwirth got busy and started to write some songs. Setting up their own personal musical “resort” in Opie’s yard, the duo began to demo new tracks. This “resort sesh” led to the creation of 18 demos that would become the seeds of “Echo Mountain HighThe band began working with Long Beach Dub Allstars guitarist Michael “Miguel” Happoldt to help figure out which of the songs to focus on.  13 songs were chosen and sent the band.  With the full band tracking straight to tape at Tracking at 64 Sound, the canvas and frame were built and it was now time to paint.  So then off to record overdubs with the great Lewis “Lew” Richards at 17th Street Recording studios , as well as at Mike and Tim’s home studios.  Within a year, the album was completed. Today’s generation of reggae-rock fans may not fully understand how critical this group was to the reggae-rock genre, following Sublime’s conclusion in 1996. They played at a time when social media was non-existent. Live-videos of their early performances are mostly of grainy VHS quality, while most live-photos shot by fans were with throw-away cameras. There was no Youtube, Facebook, and this was before Myspace or even iTunes. They were the torch bearers of a genre that Sublime introduced and the original ‘Dub Allstars lineup included most of the players who were involved in cultivating that Reggae-Rock sound with Brad Nowell. Seeing them reunite and perform new music after a 15-year absence is exciting. Together these musical professors and legends from Long Beach have engineered a new studio album that adds to the legacy of Long Beach Dub Allstars. 25 years later the band has found its resurgence with Opie Ortiz(vocals), Miguel Happoldt (guitar), Tim Wu (horns) joined by Roger Rivas (keys), Ed Kampwirth (bass) and Gil Sharone(drums).

Ballyhoo! – Shellshock Tour with Jimmie’s Chicken Shack

The Animas City Theatre PresentsBallyhoo! – Shellshock Tour with Jimmie’s Chicken ShackThursday September 28thDoors 7:00pm / Show 8:00pmTickets $25 / 21+Tickets on sale online Friday August 4th at 11am MTTickets: www.animascitytheatre.com Ballyhoo!Through 25 years and eight independent albums, the last four on their own Right Coast Records, Ballyhoo! have earned the exclamation point which marks their name. Starting in the basement of their mom’s Aberdeen, MD, home, rocking out on guitar and drums respectively, practicing every day, brothers Howi and Donald Spangler formed the proto-punk band in the mold of Green Day and Nirvana, with an eye towards the emerging ska genre led by Goldfinger, Sublime, 311 and No Doubt. The group’s eighth and most recent studio album, the breezy, ska-fueled, hook-filled Message to the World, on their own Right Coast Records, finds the self-declared “beach-rockers,” having grown up in public, accepting the responsibilities of adulthood while still hanging on to their dreams of world domination. Stylistically, their music ranges from the hard-edged punk of 2018’s Detonate, which captured the feelings of anger and depression from dealing with personal loss and the exhaustion generated by over a decade on the road to the island reggae beats of the follow-up, Message to the World. “Whatever you want to achieve, just focus on that and work towards it,” explains Howi about the Ballyhoo! ethos. “Don’t worry about followers, views, or even money. Just keep making good stuff. One day it may be possible to finally quit that day job and live your dream full time.”Ballyhoo! is still doing just that, purveying good vibes, positivity and fun live shows meant to take you away from real life…Jimmie’s Chicken Shack is an American alternative rock band from Annapolis, Maryland. They emerged through MTV as one of the first post-grunge bands of the era. Blending funk-metal with elements of ska and reggae while also demonstrating surprising acoustic prowess, lead vocalist Jimi Haha grew up in Maryland where he played with the group Ten Times Big. After that band broke up, he snowboarded for two years before beginning several acoustic jams with friends. These coalesced into Jimmie’s Chicken Shack. Based in Annapolis, MD, the group formed their own Fowl Records, which became a nexus for the leading bands in the tri-state area. After selling tens of thousands of records, Jimmie’s Chicken Shack signed to Elton John’s Rocket Records and released two major-label albums, Pushing the Salmanilla Envelope and Bring Your Own Stereo. Both albums enjoyed chart, radio, and MTV success and produced their best known hits “High” and “Do Right.” The band subsequently released two more albums Re.Present and Fail on Cue independently. The band has been a fixture on the touring circuit and is renowned for its high energy live performances.
